The potential phytotoxicity of a copper spray can be estimated in the following simple way: Seedlings of <i>Phaseolus<7i> are cut just above the cotyledons, before primary leaves reached their full s·ize. The leaves are sprayed under standard conditions and kept in the laboratory, the stem being immersed in tap water. 48 hours after spraying the leaves show different degrees of wilting or drying off, which are in the mean correlated with the potential phytotoxicity of the copper compound.
