Biological monitoring of pollution in forests and of pollution caused by wood utilisation
In the paper, we present insights into the enormous potential of using biological materials in detecting pollutants, from wood industries and from wood in usage. Often, the presented biological tests are still at a test stage. The best suitable systems have to be chosen considering criteria such as sensitivity and reliability, but also ease of handling and economical costs. Bioreporter and biosensor systems can be further developed or newly invented. Accreditations have to follow and test standards to be implemented. Avoidance of usage of toxic compounds wherever possible however would reduce our need for such biomonitoring systems.
