The conjugated hydroxymonolinuron-ß-glucoside is a metabolite identified from monolinuron studies (SCHUPHAN and EBING, 1978). In order to study its metabolic behaviour and to answer the question whether its formation can be interpreted as a detoxification reaction, radio-labeled 14C-ß-glucoside was synthesized. The short-term model experiments with spinach plants and the two standard soils showed that cleavage of 14C-hydroxymonolinuron-ß-glucoside and biodegradation occurred with the formation of 4-chlorophenyl-hydroxymethyl methoxyurea, 4-chlorophenyl-methoxyurea, 4-chlorophenylurea and carbon dioxide. The balance of conversion with the spinach plants in a closed cultivating system showed after 27 days experiment that the recovery of the applied radioactivity was 96.6 %; out of which 3.3 % were 14CO2 and 0.1 % volatile metabolites. The metabolites of shortterm experiments were confirmed and two new glucoside conjugates were identified, but their structures could not be postulated. In another experiment, 14C-hydroxymonolinuron-ß-glucoside injected into spinach plants was added to the soil for uptake by spring wheat plants in a closed cultivating system. The results showed at harvest that only 1.8 % were available to the wheat plants, 5.2 % of the radioactivity were liberated as CO2 and 82 % were bound to the soil. The results obtained are discussed in relation to the formation of conjugates with pesticides and their significance in the evaluation of terminal residues.
