In rearings of the larviparous tachinid Ernestia consobrina on host larvae of Mamestra brassicae, parasitization was followed by heavy mortalities of both hosts and parasites after 2 to 3 days. From the hemolymph of moribund and dead host larvae as weil as from larval parasites the causative agent, a gram-negative coccobacillus, was isolated and identified as Serratia liquefaciens. Based on the antibiogram of the bacterium it is suggested that, in addition to common hygienic measures, nalidixinic acid as weil as chloramphenicol could be useful therapeutics for sanitation of parasite and host rearing.
