Tierschutzindikatoren für die betriebliche Eigenkontrolle - Impulse für die Ökologische Landwirtschaft

According to the German Animal Welfare Act from 2014, livestock keepers have to monitor the well-being of their animals. One possibility to conduct this “onfarm welfare self-assessment” is to use the animal welfare indicators of the KTBL-guidelines. These guidelines are currently tested within a scientific project on 120 livestock farms (cattle, pigs, poultry), in order to gain information on the feasibility of the selected animal welfare indicators. The aim of this workshop was to discuss the usability of the KTBL-guidelines for organic agriculture with farmers, advisors and scientists. Background informations on the legal basis and the development of the KTBL-guidelines were given in a short keynote speech. Following, workshop participants discussed three different topics (selection process of proposed animal welfare indicators, applicability of animal welfare indicators and training concepts) in small groups.
