Opinion of the Panel on additives and products or substances used in animal feed (FEEDAP) on the safety and efficacy of the enzyme preparation Safizym X (endo‐1, 4‐beta‐xylanase) as feed additive for piglets in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1831/2003

Safizym X is a preparation of endo 1,4 beta-xylanase produced from Trichoderma longibrachiatum. This product has been permanently authorised for chickens for fattening, turkeys for fattening and laying hens. The applicant is now asking for authorisation to use the additive in piglets. According to Regulation (EC) No 1831/2003, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) should deliver an opinion on the efficacy and the safety of the product Safizym X for the target animal category piglets, consumers, users and the environment. The additive is marketed in two forms, a powder and a liquid form, and is recommended to be used in piglet feed at a dose level of 1680 IFP kg-1 complete feedingstuff. Although only the solid form of the product has been tested in the tolerance and efficacy tests, the FEEDAP Panel considers that the conclusions reached with the solid form can be extrapolated to the liquid preparation. Based on three efficacy studies carried out at two different locations, sufficient evidence of the efficacy of Safizym XP20 at the recommended level (i.e., 1680 IFP kg-1) in piglets has been provided. However, the minimum content proposed by the applicant in the register entry (i.e., 840 IFP kg-1) could not be assessed. As piglets tolerated 50 times the recommended dose of Safizym XP20 in feed, the use of 1680 IFP kg-1 is considered by the FEEDAP Panel to be safe for piglets. The general safety of Safizym X for consumer, user and environment has been established in an earlier SCAN opinion. The FEEDAP Panel is not aware of any new data that would indicate that these conclusions should be reconsidered. The applicant’s choice of functional group (other zootechnical additives) is not considered by the FEEDAP Panel to be appropriate. The register entry should be changed to “digestibility enhancer”.
