A survey is provided on the spread of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in the 90(th) . For Europe, the situation in the Near East is of special importance, because several introductions came the-reform. Method of analysis is the determination of a part of the nucleotide sequence of an isolate, and its alignment to respective sequences of other isolates. Isolates ar considered to be related if the sequence differences do not exceed 7%. Usually, alignments are performed with sequences that encode a part of the major viral antigen, caspid protein VP1. It is, therefore, obvious to align the deduced amino acid sequences, because they too reflect relationship in a clearly arranged manner. Eleven lines of development of type A, eight of type Asia 1 and 16 of type O, which were of importance in the near past, are provided together with 61 examples. Of pratical implication was identification of the provenance of several introductions. However, FMD is not yet under control. The reasons are discussed
