Bat rabies - a global perspective Bats are reservoirs for 11 of 12 known lyssavirus species and hence, are considered the true worldwide reservoir for lyssaviruses. In contrast to classical rabies virus, bat associated lyssaviruses have a narrower geographic and host range distribution. The occurrence of bat lyssaviruses in distinct geographic regions and their supposed chiropteran reservoir host species will be elucidated.
