Electronic systems for animal identification are used not only for process control. All animal related tasks on farms, trades and associations as well as on insurances and authorities can be automated. Obligatory standards are needed before a general application is possible. Those describe the stored information as well as the technical function and the necessary communication. Specific determination of the place of injection is necessary for a common introduction particularly for injectable transponders. Furthermore, regulations regarding the removal as well as the destruction or controlled reuse of transponders are required. The guarantee of the uniqueness of the animal code is in the responsibility of the respective country in accordance to ISO 11784. The structure of an appropriate data base has to consider the new EU ordinance No. 820/97 which defines regulations due to marking, trace cattle and meat as well.
