Einsatz der Kryokonservierung als Routinemethode für die Erhaltung alter Kartoffelsorten

A method for the cryopreservation of old potato varieties which had been designed for the routine application in genebank work was used to freeze more than 200 varieties and genotypes and store them in liquid nitrogen. Calculated on the basis of the regrowth experiments of 150 frozen varieties and genotypes a survival rate of approximately 82 % has been obtained. More important for a genebank, however, is the rate of plant regeneration. Using the same regeneration medium for all genotypes a total mean value of nearly 41 % has been achieved and what is also important, no variety has been found so far that did not regenerate plants after freezing. The technique can be recommended for the long-term storage of potato varieties and for the safety deposit of working stocks.
