Emission behavior of open stables

Emission factors of stables are used to estimate the environmental load by odor, ammonia and dust. Multiplied with the animal mass MT (unit: 1 GV = 500 kg) the emission flow is known to be used in immission prognoses. These may grant the permission for animal production. In case of doubt legal procedures follow. So the true emission is of importance. Without any filtration the airborne substances of stables are blown out by mechanically ventilated climate systems (e.g. for pig barns). Their concentration is diluted with increasing distance from the stables by atmospheric transport mechanisms. In contrast to stables with forced ventilation, open stables are characterized by a quite different emission behaviour (e.g. for cattle barns). The large and variable emission areas exclude the application of filters. The distribution of airborne substances of the stables happens nearby the walls of the stables and is imposed by the pressure distribution around the building. This article shows different possibilities to estimate emission factors.
