This dataset contains material related to a scoping review conducted on substitution effects within bioeconomy. The aim of the scoping review is to identify definitions and methodological approaches used for the quantification of substitution effects for application in a bioeconomy monitoring framework. The scoping review was conducted guided by the 27-item checklist framework indicated on the Preferred Reporting Item for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) extension for scoping reviews, PRISMA-ScR. It searched for literature in two databases (Web of Science and Scopus) using bioeconomy-related search strings and keywords and spanning twenty-two and a half years (after 1999 until 2022) of scientific literature. The final selection includes 57 peer-reviewed articles published in English.

The material includes the data extraction template, identification information from each article, summarized data extracted from articles as these relate to research questions and objectives of this review, verbatim explicit and implicit definitions as these were presented in the selected articles, as well as the displacement factors (from literature or authors` estimations) employed by the authors to analyze substitution effects.
