The rearing of dual purpose poultry genotypes can be an alternative to the culling of day-old male chicks from layer lines. Their successful establishment in the organic sector depends on their performance and the quality of the meat and eggs produced. In the EU Horizon 2020 project PPILOW, a novel dual-purpose genotype with focus on laying (C) was selected for on-farm evaluation under organic conditions in France and Germany. Males of C had similar body weight and FCR at the end of the fattening period in both countries, while a longer fattening period of at least 15 weeks is recommended based on carcass characteristics.
