Stand der Umsetzung der Beteiligungserklärung : Abschlussbericht 2022 ; Handelsforum RLV, Dialogforum des Groß- und Einzelhandels zur Reduzierung von Lebensmittelverschwendung ; Zu gut für die Tonne!

The Dialogue Forum for Wholesale and Retail to Reduce Food Waste had the objective to map the reduction of food waste, to set relevant targets up to 2030, to develop as suitable formats for implementation and monitoring, and to agree on these in the form of a so-called target agreement. Eighteen companies from the food retail sector and six from the food wholesale sector underlined their willingness to cooperate accordingly by signing a declaration of participation to the Dialogue Forum for the years 2019 to 2022 and actively contributed in the dialogue forum to achieve the set objectives. This document updates the interim report 2021 (Brüggemann, 2021). It thereby highlights the commitment of the 23 participating companies as well as the joint forum work, which has been coordinated by the CSCP in cooperation with the Thünen-Institute. It includes a summary of the monitoring reports of the Thünen-Institute on the improvement of quality and quantity of data on food waste (see chapter 3). It further describes individual measures implemented by the companies to reduce food waste (see chapter 4). It also explains the preparation of a draft target agreement in which the companies commit to reduction measures in support to SDG 12.3 (see chapter 5). Monitoring data and information on reduction measures have been provided by the companies participating in the forum.
The engagement of the 23 participating companies to the Dialogue Forum in brief:
• Each of the 23 companies works with food banks, foodsharing or local organisations to redistribute food that is still fit for human consumption. In addition, 52 measures have been taken to further improve the redistribution process.
• To improve the quality of data on food waste, all participating companies have internally collected relevant information as part of their engagement in the dialogue forum. Furthermore, 22 of the companies have provided their own data in the form of write-offs for 2019 and 2020.
• Four companies have also cooperated with the Thünen Institute to gather insights on the theoretical potential to further extend cooperation for food redistribution.
• The participating companies implemented far more than the minimum four required elective measures from three categories. Thus, between September 2019 and April 2022, the 23 companies implemented a total of 88 measures internally, 62 measures at the interfaces with suppliers and 52 measures to improve food redistribution. A total of 202 measures were specified. 16 of these measures are described in more detail in a case-study collection, to create visibility for single activities, inspire replication and foster the exchange of experiences. In so-called demonstration projects three measures were scientifically evaluated with regard to their efficiency and effectiveness.
• To consolidate the results achieved in the dialogue forum, the members have finally – under the auspices of the CSCP – prepared a target agreement in which they commit to reduction measures in support to SDG 12.3. This draft of the voluntary agreement has been submitted to BMEL in order to obtain political approval.
