Disinfestation of Grains Using “EVONTA e-3” Soft Electron Treatment
Soft electron treatment may be used to control pest insects in stored products. Experiments were carried out with defined developmental stages of the granary weevil (Sitophilus granarius), the lesser grain borer (Rhyzopertha dominica), as well as eggs of the Indian mealmoth (Plodia interpunctella). For the experiments, the seed treatment machine “EVONTA e-3” was utilized. Eggs of the Indian mealmoth were inactivated at 110 kV. While external stages could be controlled completely, internal feeders were more difficult to control but strongly decimated at 200 kV. A complete control is expected at 270 kV. This technology may be an efficient physical alternative for stored product protection in grains, legumes and spices.
