29th Annual International CEA Symposium : Banff, Canada, September 8-11, 2019

The Carcinoembryonic Antigen-related protein family are a large family of glycoproteins that govern cellular growth and differentiation, control immune cell development and activation responses, and are targeted by bacterial and viral pathogens that cause infectious disease. Inappropriate expression of CEA family members can directly contribute to clinical outcomes including the development of cancer and the onset of diabetes. This application is being submitted to request partial funding support for the 29th Annual International CEA Symposium, to be held on September 8-11, 2019 in Banff, Alberta, Canada. The symposium will be held in the Kinnear Centre for Creativity and Innovation of the Banff Centre, a world-class venue that offers a retreat-style setting a 5 minute drive outside of the Banff townsite. This symposium brings together clinical and basic scientists from all parts of the world to discuss the latest research on the CEA family of immunoglobulin-like cell adhesion molecules. Due to the role that CEA family members have in such a broad variety of areas, spanning developmental biology, diabetes, cancer and infectious disease, this is the one meeting where experts from these different disciplines can come together and share new insight gained about this remarkable protein family. Scientists in this field reached a consensus nearly 30 years ago that these highly interdisciplinary meetings would serve as an international forum to discuss on-going work in a friendly and interactive format: this has always been respected such that unpublished work is shared openly, reagents are freely shared among research laboratories, and many groups have entered into strong collaborations resulting in joint publications in high-impact work impacting a wide variety of disciplines.
