From 1999 to 2003 field, environment-controlled chamber and storage trials were carried out to find out weather there is a risk of the causal agent of bacterial ring rot of potato (Clavibacter michiganensis ssp. sepedonicus) to be transmitted when (a) healthy tubers come into contact with machinery and equipment contaminated with the causal agent (indirect contact) and (b) healthy tubers directly come into contact with infected tubers (direct contact). In case of indirect contact infection was found in leaves and tubers derived from contaminated tubers grown in an environment-controlled chamber. It was not possible to detect the pathogen in the field even after repeated planting of harvested tubers. In case of direct contact and subsequent planting of contaminated tubers in environment-controlled chambers and in the field, the pathogen was detected in the harvested tubers of all trials. Infection of leaves was found in the environment-controlled chamber and field trials. In case tubers were contaminated through direct contact and stored, the pathogen was found in all tubers tested. Altogether there is a high risk for the infection of healthy tubers if the tubers were superficial contaminated with the ring rot agent. The probability of infections increases with increasing degree of contamination. © Springer-Verlag 2004.
