Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries (STECF) - Social data in the EU fisheries sector (STECF-19-03)

Commission Decision of 25 February 2016 setting up a Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries, C(2016) 1084, OJ C 74, 26.2.2016, p. 4–10. The Commission may consult the group on any matter relating to marine and fisheries biology, fishing gear technology, fisheries economics, fisheries governance, ecosystem effects of fisheries, aquaculture or similar disciplines. This report on Social data in the EU fisheries sector is the first report of its kind, providing a comprehensive overview of the social data collected under the EU MAP for the EU fishing sector. The report provides information on the social and demographic characteristics of the labour force both at EU and Member States level over the year 2017. The collection of social indicators for the EU fishing fleet, aquaculture- and fish processing industry was introduced by Regulation No 2017/1004 on the establishment of a Union framework for the collection, management and use of data in the fisheries sector and support for scientific advice regarding the CFP (EU-MAP). The social variables, to be collected every three years from 2018 onwards, are: Employment by gender; Full Time Employment (FTE) by gender; Unpaid labour by gender; Employment by age; Employment by education level; Employment by nationality; Employment by employment status; Total FTE National. This report contains: i) a review social data in the EU fisheries sector collected under the Data Collection Framework (DCF / EU-MAP) in 2018, (ii) an EU level overview and national chapters describing the data, and (iii) a discussion on potential improvements and refinements in the collection of social data in EU fisheries.
