Proficiency testing is an important part of the quality management system. The participation in proficiency tests enables each laboratory to verify its own quality of used detection methods. Hereby, possible problems can be noticed; sources of failure can be identified and eliminated. As in previous years, the German National Reference Laboratory for Trichinelta conducted a proficiency test in 2016 focused on the detection of Trichinelta in meat samples. Overall, 118 laboratories of all 16 German Länder participated. Every participant received 6 blinded samples for detection. One of these samples was Trichinetla negative and five samples were spiked with viable Trichinella larvae (2 × 3,1 × 4, 1 × 8 und 1 × 15 larvae). All samples had to be analysed qualitatively and quantitatively. In total, 94% of all 590 positive samples were identified correctly as Trichinella-positive and 99,2% of all 118 negative samples were identified as Trichinella-negative; one negative sample was determined false positive. Focused on the single results, 93 laboratories (79% of all laboratories) detected correctly all samples as Trichinella-positive or -negative. Overall, 19 laboratories submitted one false-negative result, two participants submitted two false negative results and three false negative results were communicated by two other laboratories. Further, one laboratory submitted four false negative results and one participant identified one sample as false positive and two samples as false negative. Concerning the quantitative results, 77% were within the assigned range of tolerance whereas 12% were in the marginal range and 11% of the results were located within the warning zone. Overall, the results of the proficiency testing in 2016 demonstrate that the majority of the laboratories fulfilled the requirement of correct sample identification. Within this report, possible reasons for failure are discussed and recommendations due to the improvement of the testing quality are given.
