Opinion of the Scientific Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed on the safety of the enzymatic product Porzyme 9100 “two times concentrate” for use as feed additive for piglets

Porzyme 9100 "two times concentrate" is an additive whose active ingredients are two enzymes, endo-1,3(4)-beta-glucanase and endo-1,4-beta-xylanase produced by two different strains of Trichoderma longibrachiatum. The product is supplied in dry form, and is intended for inclusion in cereal-based diets for pigs. A previous assessment of SCAN found that the proposed conditions of use evaluated so far were acceptable as regards safety to consumers, users, animals (pigs for fattening) and the environment. The European Food Safety Authority has now received a request to assess the safety of the product for piglets. A tolerance study with 128 weaned piglets demonstrated that the addition of Porzyme 9100 “two times concentrate” to a barley-based diet at about 40 times the maximum recommended dose rate (400 U kg-1) did not adversely influence the performance or health of nursery piglets in the 5-week period post-weaning. Therefore the FEEDAP Panel concluded that the safety of Porzyme 9100 “two times concentrate” for piglets has been demonstrated.
