Novel bornavirus transmissible to humans – genetic material of the virus fully decoded : Scientists publish results in „New England Journal of Medicine“ : FLI Press Release 06/2015

Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut GND (Hrsg.)

Insel Riems, 09 July 2015. Scientists of the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut (FLI) and of the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM) have first succeeded in identifying a novel bornavirus in variegated squirrels. Most likely, the virus was transmitted to three breeders by variegated squirrels, as shown by the metagenomic analysis of tissue samples of the animals as well as of the patients who had died from encephalitis. Analyses and characterization of this virus have now been published in the high-impact scientific journal „New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM)“.
