Since 1997, novel foods and food ingredients are subjected to Regulation (EC) No 258/97, which requires an authorization or notification before novel food products can be placed on the EU market. Food and feed derived from genetically modified plants now fall within the scope of Regulation (EC) No 1892/2003. This chapter provides an overview of the respective legislation as well as the strategies and scientific criteria for the risk assessment, which forms an essential part of the authorization procedures and is to be performed according to specific guidance of the European Food Safety Authority
