Genetically Modified Feeds: Fate of Ingested DNA and Protein

High abundant plant DNA is consistently found fragmented in very low concentrations in organs of farm animals in a species‐specific manner. Tracing recombinant material like DNA or protein after uptake into the animal showed only casual traces of DNA‐fragments in animal tissues. The fate of transgenic DNA and protein in milk, meat, and eggs derived from animals receiving GM feed remains in the public focus supposing human and animal health risks, e.g., taking into account an unknown prevalence of allergic reactions against GM food. The necessity to prevent any risk to consumers after introducing GM food and feed has led to increased research activities recently.
