Salmonella in swine - epidemiology and consumer risk
Salmonellosis is the most common bacterial zoonosis in Germany. Consumption of Salmonella-contaminated foods from poultry, pigs and cattle leads to salmonellosis. Presently there is no special surveillance of Salmonellae in swine. However on the basis of Salmonella isolates received at the National Salmonella Reference Laboratory an overview on the prevalence of serovars, phagetypes and antimicrobial resistance of isolates originating from pigs and their correspondending food items can be given. Among the annual typed ca 700 to 900 strains of Salmonella S. Typhimurium (especially phagetyp DT 104) and S. Derby are predominant
